Story FAQ last update- 10.24.02 This does contain mild 'info' related spoilers. However the questions are arranged in order of appearance in the anime, with the most revealing answers toward the end. Nothing here could easily be called 'major' spoilers. 1. Where are Kaname's parents? Kaname lives alone in Tokyo. Her mother passed away a few years prior to the story. Her father lives in the NYC area with Kaname's younger sister. Although unexplained, the reason is assumed to be so that Kaname can finish her education in Japan. It is shown within the story that she is clearly mature enough to maintain a home for herself without the problems stereotypical to teenagers alone. Her father must be making a very nice salary to be able to afford a spacious, western style apartment for her in Tokyo! 2. What does SRT stand for? What does 'ECS' stand for? 'Special Response Team', and 'Electronic Camouflage System' (appreciation to M.Mots for the ESC Info!) 3. What is Whispered? There is not yet a complete and clear answer. 'Whispered' people are a very very small number of people, and how they came to be is unknown. Somehow they have scientific and technical knowledge stored within their minds, in addition to other unusual traits and abilities unique to those who are Whispered. For a more complete answer, please scroll down to the bottom, but avoid if you wish not to know until after you've seen the entire anime. 4. What is 'Black Technology'? 'Black Technology' is a term Gaulun uses to describe the information Whispered can provide. This is usually scientific and technological knowledge that is very advanced compared to current conventional knowledge. It may be referred to as 'black' technology, because the most common use for such knowledge is weaponry capable of causing much death and destruction. It may also be termed 'black' because the most common methods of obtaining that knowledge is highly unethical, to the point of literal use and abuse of Whispered individuals. 'Black technology' may also be viewed along the same lines as the concept of a 'black market'- something primarily used by groups and individuals outside conventional and widely accepted systems of government and law. Any other reasons why the term 'black' is used is currently unknown. in other words, your educated guess is as good as mine 5. Why does Gaulun call Sousuke 'Kashim'? Back at the time of Gaulun's and Sousuke's first interaction, Sousuke was living in a part of the world where a name like 'Kashim' was more acceptable then a foreign one like Sousuke. When Gaulun first became aware of Sousuke, he learned his false name, and has chosen to use it even when he certainly is aware of Sousuke's real name. any other reason is currently unknown 6. What is the Lambda Driver? The primary example of 'black technology', developed with knowledge from Whispered. Using scientific principles previously unknown to modern science, LD technology incorporates a pilot's emotions into defense and attack ability. The result is mechanical units that can defy conventional science. Examples include the ability to create a defensive 'shield' that can slow, stop, and reverse an incoming attack, the ability to turn an incoming attack back on the attacker with many times more force. A unit equipped with the Lamba Driver, and piloted by a knowledgeable individual, is very difficult to counter with conventional means. 7. What is Mithril? Mithril is a mercenary military organization that somehow survives outside the law of any country. They are highly secretive, operating largely unknown to the vast majority of the world's civilians. They are known for being highly ethical, selecting operations that counter the progress of terrorists, communists, dictators, and any others who would be harmful to the international community. They are often approached by countries in need of assistance, and are assumably well paid for their involvement. However, Mithril often takes on missions of their own, for their own ethical reasons, without expectation or hope of payment. Mithril's soldiers and officers are considered mercenaries, as most join Mithril for employment. Mithril is not recognized as being affiliated with any country, and there is still many mysteries surrounding the group. 8. How can Tessa be a captain at only 16 years old? How she came to be in this position is currently largely unknown, but she has it for a good reason. She is one of the few who understand the special abilities of the Tuatha de Daanan the best, so to have anyone else in command of it's maneuvers would result in an inefficient use of the sub. However, Tessa is provided with two very experienced and trustworthy advisers who handle non-sub situations. She almost always follows their advice when she needs it. 9. Why does Sousuke only pilot the ARX-7? This is something that went largely unmentioned in the anime. In episode 7, with Sousuke piloting, the ARX-7's Lamba Driver system was initiated for the first time. In doing so, it was automatically calibrated to Sousuke's personal emotional profile, and cannot be adjusted to work for another pilot. Sousuke is now the sole pilot of the ARX-7, assumably unintended. This becomes important in the serious plot that continues past the point the anime ended at. 10. Why is the Tuatha De Daanan the most advanced submarine in the world? The Tuatha De Daanan is equipped with a Lamda Driver System, in addition to several other technological advances that modern conventional science has yet to catch up to. A Whispered individual worked a great deal on designing the Tuatha De Daanan to be both as advanced and as safe as possible. Because not many countries have access to Whispered, none have yet developed as advanced a craft. 11. What are the other skills of Whispered people? In addition to the knowledge discussed above, Whispered people can initiate a Lamda Driver System, something fairly major. They also have a telepathic ability, both with Lamda Driver systems, and with other Whispered. Other skills and abilities are still unknown. |
