| visual review of episode 1 *I Want to Protect You* Huge fish-looking submarine gliding underwater- the Tuatha de Danaan. The sub's captian, Tessa, and Major Kalinin discuss the SRT team's reports- Tessa worries about Sousuke, and if the situation is too difficult. (being ordered about by civilians, having his weapons confiscated, being physically restrained...) Kalanin tells her it's not impossible to deal with, and that perhaps it's not a bad experience for him. Tessa giggles agreement, but wonders when the team can be recalled. Apparently it's up to the Danaan to eliminate the potential danger so Kaname, and the other 'Whispered' cannidates will be safe. Sousuke's second day of school proceeds pretty much like his first- troublesome. He glimpses Kaname carrying a bust for art class, and mistakes it for her struggling with a bad guy. (guess who gets to clean up the broken piece?) Kaname plainly shows how exasperated she is, and Sousuke can only make a lame excuse about slipping (and managing to smash into her from across the room!) Later Sousuke tells Kurtz he needs to meet with the teacher after class (because of all of the trouble he's caused!), and that Kurtz needs to take over following Kaname when she leaves the school. Melissa is listening, while grocery shopping, and sympathizes with all of the trouble he's going through- and then flips out over the high price of canned crab. In between Sousuke's bad luck at school, and Melissa's ranting about Tokyo's high prices, Kurtz can only grin. Sousuke's heading down the school's long hallway (assumably to meet with the teacher), when he spots trouble (yet again...) At the end of the hallway is the staircase. Coming down the staircase- Kaname, who's chatting with Kyouko. Suspiciously hiding around the corner from the staircase, a classmate, who's wearing an awfully evil smile. Surely this is true trouble! Of course he starts running, gun drawn, to get to the suspicious girl before she can cause any harm! But he's too late, and the classmate jumps out to give Kaname and Kyouko a shock, then they all...laugh. Sousuke figures out pretty quick that the only real trouble is that he's running full speed down the hallway, with no time to stop before he gets to the staircase. Also too late, the girls finally notice him, along with the teacher who had been coming up the stairs. It ends up being the teacher, who he runs into. Oops. Kyouko gets a picture of course. Well, the teacher isn't very pleased, of course. She's laying it on Sousuke pretty heavy, particulary since she's caught him, yet again, with an inappropriate toy gun. Of course, he continues to insist it's not a toy. She won't hear any of it. Kyouko and Kaname are peeking in the door, Kyouko wants a picture. Kaname says she can't understand why Kyouko would be interested in someone so strange, but she has to peek again, after Kyouko explains that, although she can't understand it, Sousuke is an interesting person to watch. That evening, Sousuke sits ill-humored, while Kurtz takes care of his mutiple injuries. Melissa's monitoring Kaname, who's at home not doing much, which leaves the three able to talk. Kurtz wonders if Sousuke's gonna die on this mission, and lists all kinds of wierd things he's done in school. (tipping over bookcases, broken windows, 'slipped' on stairs...) Kurtz muses over the whole mission, they really are in the dark as to why such an ordinary girl might be targeted by groups like the KGB. Sousuke seems particularly miserable throughout the whole exchange. Full moon, foggy night, lonely bridge... A man meets with two uniformed KGB officers. The man slips the two a picture- it's an image of a Mithril M-9. The man explains Mithril is a secret group that has interfered with various activities such as nuclear weapon deals, terrorist activities, ect. Mithril has the most advanced technology in the world. He also explains that Mithril would no longer have total advantage once the 'current research' is completed. Apparently this man is involved with the KGB on this research, and his duty is to locate and obtain a subject for this mysterious research. His name is Gaulun. One KGB officer gets angry with the man, but is shot dead before he can complete his threat. Very casually, the man returns to the matter at hand with the stunned remaining officer, and gives him the profile of his next target for the research, Kaname Chidori. "Cute, isn't she?", the man asks. Back in school (3rd day?), Kaname is trying to get the attention of the class. As class representive, it's her responsibility to see that all of the relevant duties for their upcoming class trip are assigned to students. The class doesn't seem to be particulary interested in listening to her, which is alright since she's already written up the assignments. The class fawns over her (while she brags a little bit), except for Kyouko and 2 classmates, who comically decide that Kaname is really much too eager and aggressive (she could almost run for Miss Japan, if her attitude weren't so awful). Kaname gets to the last assignment she made, and she's assigned Sousuke to trash duty. He isn't happy about it, but accepts it after Kaname insists new students are always given trash duty. The class leers, and Kaname shows...guilt? Later, Kaname, Kyouko, and those girls are hanging out eating, gossping, that sort of thing. The girls say it's very suprising, how Sousuke looked like he acutally believed the bit about trash duty, and stare at Kaname saying that is wasn't a very Kaname-like thing for her to do. Kyouko get's snap-happy, and decides to get pics of their meals, before they are all gone. Meanwhile, unknown to the girls, Sousuke's also there, sitting alone behind a newspaper. Not just any newspaper, it's dated 1994, and happens to have a little spyhole cut into it, so he can watch while not drawing any attention. He's telling Kurtz what the situation is, when he happens to spot a suspicious looking man also in the joint. This guy is alone, dressed in a full length trenchcoat (on a nice day!), and has with him a suspicious looking suitcase. Sousuke freaks, telling Kurtz this man looks like a classic terrorist bomber. Kurtz is shocked- the danger is kidnapping, not murder right? Sousuke is relieved when the man gets up and leaves, but doesn't relax any before he realizes someone's gone missing... The suspicious man had left his suitcase, and, being all good-samaratian like, Kaname's picked up it and is running out to catch up to the man. Course Sousuke still thinks it's a set-up even more now, and runs out to stop her- or he would have, if he didn't run right into the next table and spilling it (and himself) into the floor. Kaname's calling after the man, and Sousuke's behind her, but too far behind her, when she steps into the street, into the path of an oncoming truck. Too late she sees it, but it's alright, since with a single flying leap Sousuke gets em both off the road (and crashing through a bunch of parked bicycles). Well, the truck isn't alright, since *something* stops it with a grinding crunch (we briefly get to see the M-9 which is crouched in the roadway, when the truck hits it). Kaname seems pretty scared, too scared to really notice that Sousuke is there, much less that it's him who's she's being held by. The troublesome suitcase is laying on the sidewalk, and the man rushes over- turns out it's his precious collection of cute-girl stuff. Kyouko and the others run over, exclaiming all the while- Kaname is surprised that it's Sousuke who is there. She seems somewhat awed by his telling the other girls that he was just doing what had to be done (saving Kaname), but it fades fast, when she realizes he's got a hand full on her breast (inadverdently one assumes). There's a nice few seconds as she builds up her temper, while the girls praise Sousuke (and he so earnestly replies), but finally she growls and lets him have it. (watching from the M-9, Kurtz's grin is weak) Later- Kaname is alone, peacefully reading on the train. But not for long. She slams closed her books, calmly puts it away, and confronts a fellow passenger- Sousuke, who's been 'reading' his wierd newpaper, sitting not-quite but almost across from her. She yanks away the paper, and demands to know exactly what is going on. "What a coincidence!" So she slams her foot down on his seat (right between the legs, which seems to unsettle him quite a bit), and demands to know exactly what is going on. He doesn't know what she's talking about, really. He's just minding his own business, really. It's just a coincidence, that he happens to be everywhere she is, really. Of course, she doesn't buy it. It's all just a coincindence, right? So it'll be alright if she just slips out the train doors at this stop, right before the close? Well, that's exactly what she does, and the doors shut right before he can get out of them too. She gives him the classic japanese facial taunt (tounge out, pulled down eyelid), and waves 'bye bye Hentai-san' as the train departs. Sousuke can't let himself be seperated from his ward, and runs to the back of the train- drops a side window, and jumps out (with a quite messy rolling landing on the platform). Kaname was pretty dang shocked, and runs to him to check that he's alright. He is, and seems surprised by her genuine concern, but absloutely sticks to his 'it's just a coincidence' excuse. (you know, he just *happened* to want to suddenly get off at that particular stop, for no reason that has anything to do with her). She's set to argue with him some more, but drops it, and drops herself onto a bench, and Sousuke stubbornly joins her (for no reason that has anything to do with her of course, he just happened to suddently want to sit there) Although she's feeling pretty exasperated, she uses the opportunity to ask him some questions, which he answers readily enough- he tells her that because of modern technology he's not really apart from his friends from the many places he's been to, and she asks about his girlfriend, he explains he doesn't have anyone like that. He tells her that he was told by a friend of his that he would never ever find a girl who could handle a guy like himself, and that he really has no idea what that means. Kaname laughs, and tells him she knows exactly what his friend meant- Sousuke is so strange, that's what the friend meant. She also explains to him that maybe one day, he'd meet someone really special who would understand his strange as being good. Sousuke ponders it a moment, and says he gets it- and that he'd remember that Kaname was 'special'. She's embrassed, and tells him not to be so serious, so he says he'll forget it, which brings Kaname more laughter. Sousuke only sits, closes his eyes, and *smiles* (yeah, smiles!) Later that night, a dog barks, telephone wires shake- it's Kurtz piloting home the M-9. He stops short of stepping on a couple of civilians, and watches as a man turns and walks away. Kurtz hopes he wasn't noticed. After stowing the M-9, Kurtz grumbles about Sousuke's insistince that he always check the outside of the mech- and discovers a wad of chewed gum stuck to it. 'Could it be...?' he wonders, and thinks back to that moment of the man turning away- Kurtz is shocked that a japanese civilian could have....littered!!? Kaname is home, on the phone with Kyouko. Kyouko mentions Kaname sounds happy, and wonders why. Something must have happened with Sousuke...? Kaname adamantly denies this, with her awful I-don't-know-what-you're-talking-about laugh, which neatly settles the situation for Kyouko. End ![]() Another good episode- more amusing and silly school incidents, and setting up for the upcoming action. The panty shot in the train station scene was really pointless, and was drawn pretty badly anyway. Found it amusing that, also in that scene, when Kaname's having a 'pretty' moment with cherry blossoms falling around her, and the wind in her hair, Sousuke isn't looking at her. Just goes to show how different he is from the anonymous guys in episode one who couldn't not look at her when she was having a similar 'pretty' moment walking to school. |
