Kalinin is shown again going over the operation

The Whispered One

Back up a few minutes from the ending of episode 4, and we get to see what happens on Kaname's side-
She's seeing words again, awake this time, and it's getting wierd.
She flips out, and starts banging around, insulting the scientist. Kaname refuses to comply with the woman's orders to behave, and the scientist approaches her.

Sousuke is anxious, watching the truck and the 2 armed guards outside.

The scientist releases Kaname from the device, intending to force her, and they struggle. She takes Kaname's elbow in the face, and slumps to the floor.
Kaname's impressed by her luck, but not for long- she slips on some sandals and heads for the door. But before she can open it, the scientist is up, aiming at her.
Kaname again refuses to behave as the scientist wants, and the woman shoots...

Outside Sousuke hears the first shot...

Kaname's wide-eyed to see the bullet blast in the door, mere inches from her head, and the scientist shoots again...

Sousuke steps out...

The two guards have opened the rear of the truck and are demanding to know what's going on.
The scientist explains that is it just a little trouble with Kaname's behavior, and they restrain her. The scientist seems a little too happy that Kaname has acted up, and she shows a hypodermic needle loaded with an experimental drug. But she doesn't get to administer it, for the two guards holding down Kaname suddenly and silently drop- Sousuke's gotten 'em from behind with the tazer.
He's got a gun, and doesn't hesitate to use it to get information from the scientist. He wants to know why they kidnapped Kaname, and what the lab is.
It takes two warning shots (given without the slightest flinch on Sousuke's part), but she finally spills that the lab is to determine is Kaname is Whispered, a term neither have ever heard. That's all he gets though, before shooting from the outside starts up.
Sousuke gets Kaname out of the way in time, and is returning fire...

At the same time, Kurtz and Melissa are prepping for the operation. Melissa isn't worried about Sousuke at all, claiming he could run through a minefield with no problem. Kurtz clarifies that he's not worried about Sousuke's safety, he's wondering is Sousuke might be taking advantage of the situation to play hero for Kaname, even though she has a lower priority than the hostages. Melissa's pretty sure Sousuke wouldn't ditch his main mission to the safety of the hostages....
And during this talk, we get to see shots of Sousuke doing just that :)
He's taken out the gunmen, and they are at the truck's door while Sousuke figures out when to go where.
Kaname protests leaving though, she's only wearing a very skimpy lab robe which does little to protect her modesty. Like Sousuke cares...
More incoming fire, and Kaname does her best to beat on Sousuke for landing on her.

On the plane the teacher is crying, distraught that they took Kaname. Shinji is the only one who cares that Sousuke is missing too....

Back at the truck Sousouke's upgraded his handgun to an auto, Kaname's wearing his jacket, and they manage to get to a nearby truck.
While he drives, he explains to Kaname about their mission watching her. Everything comes as an unpleasant surprise, and she doesn't quite believe it. Enemy Arm-Slaves approach from the front, and Sousuke crashes the truck the the wall of a warehouse. RK-92 (Savage) ASs are being stored there- Sousuke heads to the nearest one.
Kaname yells at him, not believing that he could pilot one. He replies 'I'm not an amateur, I'm a specalist!' in a rather freaky way.
The cockpit pops open, and in he climbs. Kaname'e somewhat taken aback, but takes cover when the enemy gets in. Sousuke's stuck in the AS, waiting for the damn thing to get started. The enemy approaches, but right before they shoot Sousouke's stolen AS readies, and he takes them out pretty efficently.
Now, Kaname's starting to believe, although it takes some effort.

Gaulun listens as his allied forces mobilize- there's an intruder on base. He smiles.

Sousuke, in the AS, carries Kaname through some enemy fire and finally off base, into the surrounding woods. Kaname's worried about the others in the plane, and Sousuke reassures her there is a rescue team on the way.

Speaking of rescue teams, the operation is underway...the air forces are airborne, and the Arm-Slaves are taking off (with some more bad humor from Kurtz). Tessa and Kalinin watch from the Danaan's bridge.

Back in the woods Kaname's dealing with a difficult ride. They come across a small river, and a shot comes out of nowhere. Sousuke can find nothing on the AS sensors, but there must be something...
Another shot, only this time it's a grenade. For a moment things look really bad as another grenade bounces off the AS, but a shot to the hip takes off one of the AS's legs. It goes down, and Kaname's in the waist deep water. Sousuke can't get the damaged AS up, and his fire does nothing to halt the approaching enemy AS. The enemy disables Sousuke's AS entirely. The silver AS leans in so it's pilot (Gaulun) can get a look. And Gaulun recognizes Sousuke, and names him Kashim.
Clever of Mithril to put an agent posing as a student, Gaulun muses. He's pleased, and asks how Kalanin is doing.
Sousuke wonders how Gaulun is still alive, he explains that, due to a previous injury, he has a titanium plate wrapped around his brain.
Gaulun wants to really get Kaname to get what's inside her brain- 'black technology' like the Lamda driver, something that will make even nuclear weapons meaningless. And here Gaulun stops, since he sees that neither knows what he's talking about...

Gaulun takes aim for stuck Sousuke, since he might as well get on with business. Kaname moves forward protesting, when, from above, shots hit Gaulun's weapon. It's Kurtz in his AS, dropping from the sky, who saves Sousuke. Gaulun makes a retreat almost as showy as Kurtz's enterance, and Kaname's in for another shock as she realizes that Kurtz is the Kurtz with the bad 'pretty girl' english.
Kurtz is cheerful as he asks how she is.
He tells them that they have only a few minutes to get back to the base, where transport planes will be taking off shortly. Sousuke climbs out of the damanged AS, and he's injured but not enough to slow him down. Before leaving, Sousuke offers Kurtz a warning about the silver AS- it and it's pilot are more advanced than Kurtz.

Mithril's other forces are landing at the base, backing the enemy off the plane. The students are frightened watching the action- all but Shinji who's deliriously happy getting to see it all.
Melissa slices open the side of the cargo hold, grabs up the bomb, and tosses it away just as it blows. (amusingly, she orders the hostages on the plane to move away from the windows, noone does :)
The plane is suddenly boarded by armed forces claiming to be a UN rescue team, and they evacuate the plane.

Sousuke and Kaname run to the base under fire...

Back in the woods Kurtz is hunting the enemy AS, but is having no luck hitting. Instead of attacking, Gaulun merely dodges...
Kurtz is trying to figure out why...

The teacher demands to know where Kaname is... Melissa tells her not to worry, they'll get Kaname back safe.

Shinji calls out Sousuke is missing too, but gets swallowed by the mass of running students.

Sousuke and Kaname are still running, and they can just barely see the transport planes..

Kurtz is still being played around with. Melissa orders him to get out of there, they are running out of time!
Kurtz tells her he's got a little bit of trouble...
Kurtz fakes running out of ammo, hoping Gaulun will approach for a knife battle. He does, and Kurtz whips up the AS rifle and gets off a point-blank shot.

The planes are taking off, and Melissa worries about not hearing from Kurtz...

Sousuke and Kaname head for the runway, but it's already too late...both planes take off leaving them behind...

Comments-
Much of the same, quality wise. More nice visuals- the water in that river looked really pretty.

It was really back and forth for Sousuke and Kaname this episode.
But there's something I can't figure out between this episode and the next....
They're on the runway....and although the planes have taken off, Mithril's forces are still running around. Now, could there be a line of enemies between S+K and Mithril? Convience for the plot I guess, it would be too easy to have em be rescued by the M-9s still hanging around!
BTW, apparently Gaulun's silver AS has Kodaaru (Plan1056) (code...?) as it's name. I think I'll stick to referring to it as the silver one for now.
