Mithril's clean up crew has moved in.
The island is mostly secured, and the hostages safe.
Melissa has been rescued from the M9, but is
unconcious, seriously injured.
Sousuke watches, with a serious face, as she's taken
by the medical team.
*Deep Trap*
The rescue helicopter takes off, and Kurtz and officer
Liang approach Sousuke.
They try to be cheerful, telling him everything will
be alirght, considering how tough Melissa is.
Dannigan walks by in the background, and looks
away.
McKaren tells Sousuke not to worry, and good
job...
Sousuke still has a serious face.
Gaulun is in custody, and Kalanin meets him.
Gaulun is fake-friendly with his greeting.
Kalanin wants to know what Gaulun is up to, and of
course, Gaulun plays innocent (with his un-innocent
smirk).
Kalanin coldly explains to Glaun that he will
definately kill Gaulun, after Mithril has gotten needed
information from him.
Not only does Gaulun not worry about this, but he makes
his typical smartass jokes as he's taken away...
Kalanin stands firm as Gaulun purposefully pushes past
him.
Kalanin issues the final clean up orders, and says he
will have to meet with the Americans.
Kalanin talks with McKaren, expressing his
suspicions-
Gaulun isn't an easy man to capture or kill. Despite
his casual atttiude, he's deadly serious, and McKaren
wonders if it's a plan to keep Mithril's attention
away from some bigger event.
Kalanin doesn't know, but is sure Gaulun has his own
escape plan.
They watch as crew members evaluate Venom, Kalanin and
orders Gaulun into total isolation, and that he should
be treated as a wild, dangerous animal.
Kaname is in the hallway, watching the returning
officers.
She's very upset to see Melissa rushed by, but the
medical officer cheerfuly reassures her, saying
Melissa's only suffered a concussion and minor cracked
ribs. She tells Kaname that Melissa is as strong as a
wild young horse.
Kaname tries to feel relieved, but just then a silent,
heavy stepping Sousuke walks past her...
She calls to him but he doesn't answer. She tries
walking with him, but he doesn't respond...
In the locker room he sits, downcast, and clearly
upset/depressed.
Unable to just leave him alone Kaname approaches
timidly, and he tells her he's ashamed of making a
mistake and can't go with the others at the moment. He
angrily pulls on his hair...
Kaname asks if anyone died, and he says no...she tries
to use this as an argument for everything will be
alright, to encourage him, but he resists the attempt
and tells her not to be so casual.
He goes on to blame himself for Melissa's injury, and
is angry that he could have gotten her killed....him
and that stupid Arm-Slave (the ARX).
He says he couldn't initate the LD, and goes on to
rant about how stupid such a thing is as a weapon,
needing emotions and mental imaging and all.
He curses it's creator...
Kaname sits, some distance away but not far, and
carefully suggests that he rest a little bit.
Maybe Sousuke's just tired, like from before. She
quietly chatters about how Kurtz is worried too, and
Sousuke finally looks at her, but then he looks away
with a hard face and insists he's not tired.
Kaname says she doesn't think that really seems like
him, and he bursts out with how she doesn't know him
well enough to know what that he should be like.
He goes on, saying he was just normal, just a ordinay
soldier, just doing ordinary things with ordinary
equipment- but that since that kidnapping, how awful
everything has gotten.
Gaulun, the ARX, the desert- and protecting
Kaname...it's all just awful!
Kaname jumps up angrily, and tells him that if it were
up to her, she wouldn't have anything to do with him
at all!
She yells at him to quit, if it's all so annoying.
He yells back that he can't because he's the only one
who can be successful.
He tells her maybe *shes* the one who's too tired, ans
she interrupts him with a denial of that, and tells
him she's worried. He's quiet but hard, when he tells
her he understands, and that she can leave now.
She backs off, and runs out of the room.
Kurtz and Laing are outside the door- Kaname pushes
past them, fleeing, and they see her tears.
Both men confirm that they saw them...
Inside the room, Sousuke looks up when Kurtz says his
name- and suddenly he's flying into the wall from
Kurtz's fierce punch.
Laing has to hold back Kurtz as Sousuke asks him what
he's doing...
Kurtz shows his anger as he apologizes but says he
just had to hit him.
Kurtz hates to watch Sousuke trying to be a
'hero'.
Sousuke doesn't get much of a change to counter, and
the two are facing off as Kurtz explains to him how
Sousuke's acting like a kid and saying awful things to
a girl. He curses at Sousuke, and compares him to
violent husbands.
Laing seems kinda embrassed....
Kurtz still doesn't let Sousuke finish speaking...and
tells him what an idiot he is for making someone as
great as Kaname is cry...Kurtz goes on a little more,
but Sousuke's changed- he's surprised that Kaname
cried. Kurtz shuts up and the two stare- finally Kurtz
gives a 'Humph!'and explains to Sousuke that sometimes
bad stuff just happens- it can't always be prevented.
Sousuke just watches, and Kurtz demands to know if
Sousuke's planning on doing everything himself but
only gets a reaction when he yells at Sousuke to not
be so arrogant. Kurtz walks off in a huff...
On the bridge- Tessa has received a report that there
hadn't been anything wrong with Venom.
It's been secured and isn't expected to cause any
trouble. There is a self-destruct device that could
pose a problem, but only if someone messes with it.
Tessa has to be prodded (she's elsewhere mentally),
but she says that the Venom will be dealt with at the
base and dismisses the reporting officer.
Tessa requests a few moments to talk privately with
Marducas...
Another submarine, another bridge.
The captian has received a transmission that states
that the 'Toy Box' will be in his vincinity within 12
hours, and to collect data on it if possible.
The captian seems rather pissed off. His second tries
to calm him down with a reasonable voice, but implies
they are in this situation because of a previous
mistake.
The captian, pretty calm now, relates a childhood
story-
He was once captian of a little leauge baseball team.
On this team he had a player who was pretty worthless.
He did his best to minimize this player- and
deliberatly embrassing him for any mistake made. He
says that now he thinks this must have been what that
player felt when he was being punished for messing
up.
The second makes a comment about what a boring story,
and the captian shows his temper yet again...
Depressed Kaname is hanging out in the mess hall
kitchen.
The other dude is trying to cheer her up, offering her
snacks, but she's not hungry.
He suggests maybe she go back to Tessa's quarters and
take a nap, but she says she doesn't want to go back
there.
he tries to reassure her a little more (trying to
convince her to go do some things to make herself feel
better) but her response is just to ask if he would
rather she left.
He says no....
But after a moment she leaves anyway.
Meanwhile Sousuke's looking for her.
We see several shots of him asking around, but noone
he speaks with knows her whereabouts-
Kaname's wandering by herself somewhat
aimlessly...
Both look very down.
Finally Kaname makes her way to the hanger, where it's
quiet and she's alone.
She remembers she has Kyouko's camera with her, and
goes to take a snapshop of the EQ there, but
stops...
Sousuke's in the kitchen, clearly learning she had
been there but left...
She's reviewing past images still stored in the
camera... a lot of her laughing with Kyouko, groups
of classmates...ocassionally Sousuke's in one, and
finally she stops at an image of herself with him in
the background, looking serious as normal....
Suddenly she switches it off, and stands...
She's running through the halls...
Sousuke's running too, looking...
Gaulun is totally strapped in, held entirely immobile
by a straightjacket, and is being guarded by two
officers, Dannigan and Laing.
Laing yawns, and Dannigan reprimands him to be on
alert. Laing wonders what Gaulun could do, being held
as securely as he is.
Gaulun smirks.
Dannigan explains their job is to be ready for any
kind of thing to happen at any time...
Laing wonders 'like what' as Dannigan raises his
gun....and aims at Laing's head.
'something like this?' Dannigan asks, as he silently
blows the poor guy's brains out.
Gaulun, freed from his restraints, tells Dannigan he
wasn't sure how long he was going to have to sit like
that. Dannigan says he wasn't sure about it himself,
but that he'd been decided on this since the last
mission. He tells Gaulun he's pretty nervous about this
whole thing...
(aside- if Gaulun was ugly in the AS suit, he's even
uglier in his thermal style underwear! EW!)
Gaulun thanks him, and asks his name....Dannigan
introduces himself as John Dannigan.
Gaulun smiles his awful smile, and very chummily says
'thank you John' while drawing out 'John' in a very
rude, mocking manner.
Dannigan is annoyed, and tells him not to be so
friendly!
He isn't allowing Gaulun to call him John...
Gaulun laughs, and asks him if he doesn't plan on
following any of Gaulun's orders, and Dannigan says
'you got it!'. Then he makes the mistake of turning
his back on Gaulun.
(was the 'wild animal' description not passed on to
him??)
Suddenly Dannigan is on the ground, and Gaulun's taken
his gun.
Gaulun aims it at Dannigan's face and gloats about how
easily 'Jooohnn' was surprised...
and makes fun of the guy (Gaulun shows some of his most
terrible expressions here).
Dannigan swears at him some more, so Gaulun aims the
gun at Dannigan's...um...most private personal
equipment.
Suddenly (sweating) Dannigan is willing to agree with
Gaulun...He promises he won't cause any more trouble,
and will obey his orders.
Gaulun's now in the standard Mithril uniform, and the
two men sneak through the halls on the way to the
bridge.
Suddenly they are stopped...McKaren is aiming at them.
He expresses surprise that one of them could be a
traitor, but was prepared because of Kalanin's
warning.
Gwen comes up from behind, and McKaren orders him to
summon the others.
But Gwen doesn't act as ordered- he shoots McKaren
dead instead.
Gwen was the other traitor. He seems pretty cheerful,
and requests a bonus from Gaulun...
right when Kaname (looking for Sousuke) runs in. She
stops, shocked by what she's seeing (Gwen dragging a
bloody body)...and Gaulun grins.
Suddenly Gwen launches himself at Kaname, and she
takes off running, but he grabs her hair and she falls
back into him- he slams her head into the wall and
tells her basically to play nice, or she'll suffer
some permanent physical damage.
Dannigan wants to kill her, to prevent her from
causing trouble, but Gaulun denies it- saying she's
very special and he wants her alive.
Gaulun moves in close to her, and chummily asks her if
she's been well- if school's been good.
The bridge crew jumps up but Tessa orders them to stop
when the three men, with Kaname as hostage, enter the
bridge.
Gaulun shows his pleasure at Tessa's intelligence.
He tells everyone to behave, or bad things will happen
to the 'cute captian'.
Kaname joins the 'cute captian', and Tessa asks her if
she's alright. She says she is, but that a solider had
been killed...
Gaulun orders Tessa to change the Daanan's heading, and
she refuses.
Gaulun threatens an officer- Kaname makes a loud
protest but Tessa holds her back- the officer tells
Tessa not to give in, but Tessa decides to comply at
the last moment, explaining its only a change in
heading.
She orders the change.
Gaulun has examined the computer equipment, and
explains he had anticipated resistance, so he brought
a backup plan.
He holds up a cd labeled 'Toy Box', and tells them
that Dannigan and Gwen aren't the only ones working
for him. He says that even officers in Mithril
Headquarters are able to be bought- and that Mithril,
as an orgnaization, doesn't have that much
intregty. He loads in the cd, and the bridge screens switch from
blue to red- and the AI voice welcomes 'Captian
Gaulun'. Tessa is in disbelief, and Gaulun orders an emergency
evacuation drill.
All around the sub an alarm sounds as an announcement
is made ordering the crew to evacuate to the hanger.
The crew is surprised at such poor timing for a drill,
but runs as ordered. Sousuke runs in the opposite direction...but is stopped by an officer.
An emergency door is closing behind the man as Sousuke
tries to quickly explain he's looking for Kaname, but
the man tells him he can't allow Sousuke to go past-
since everyone behind the closed doors will be
considered failed evacuees and dead. It's an
order- Sousuke thinks a moment about Kaname, and then defies
that order, and dives past the man and underneath the
door just as it slams shut.
He gets up, only to discover Kurtz up ahead, who
teases Sousuke for violating orders.
Kurtz says he's there only because he doesn't like
doing the same thing everyone else is doing, and says
that he was suprised somneone like Sousuke behaved the
same way. Sousuke cuts him off, saying there must be something
wrong, and Kurtz agrees.
They set off together...
On the bridge the evacuation is reported as complete.
Kaname, with angry confidence, takes Tessa's hand, and
whispers to her that they can't lose. Although looking uncertian, Tessa half
smiles... End
