I think of this soundtrack, the first soundtrack, as the basic one. Its simple. Innocent. Its the foundation on which the next 2 soundtracks are built. I like it, but I like them all so I am biased.
Track one starts off with familiar delicate piano before swelling into the orchestral theme that traverses a variety of the musical threads that would be familar with someone who has viewed even only a few episodes.
Track 2 is a long version of the opening song, very pop, very catchy.
Tracks 3 thorugh 22 are all instrumentals, generally shorter pieces. Approx the first half consist of the nice, positive sounding themes from 'good' scenes, the latter half begin the darker themes such as the Student Council's elevator music (if only my elevator's music were as good!), and the eerie Shadow Girls' theme.
Track 23 is the inital, very basic ZUM, which is followed by 2 instrumental pieces, one of which is the sword pull music.
Tracks 26 to 32 are the duel songs through episode 12, covering the Student Council Saga. I love the duel songs, although there are many people who find it hard to appreciate the odd rock chorus sound. Other people only need to see it used in context to like it.
Track 33 is ZUM with a new sound, its heavier instrumentally and with an added men's chorus. I prefer this version to the first one myself. It is used for the ascension sequence in the Black Rose Saga (episodes 14-23).
A final instrumental, the ending theme, and then ZUM Karaoke! Come on folks, sing along! 'Zettai Unmei Morushiroku' Absloute Destiny Apocolypse! Darkness Never Ending!' I'd like to see someone try that in their local karaoke bar. Or maybe not. But the instrumental version is cool, really!
