What is J.A. Seazer on?
I love this cd.
Only 3 tracks from it are used in the movie in any form, so its bascially Seazer filler. I'd say many of the tracks here are duel-worthy, but they don't carry the duel sound traditional to the television series. The tracks here are exceptionally wierd. Perhaps Seazer felt inhibited in needing to keep the tv series music all along the same veins, for here he shows diversity and experimentation unlike anything on the previous Utena albums. Even the unjaded listener who finds the tv series music new and strange, may find this pushes boundries.
With the exception of the instrumental first track, the ever present female/male chorus is present- even more haunting, powerful, and perfect. A woman blessed with a wonderfully high reaching, smooth voice often solos high above the twin vocal marchings of the low ranged women and deep voiced men. It is definately less 'rock' sounding. Exotic is the best word I can think to describe this.
Track 1 is the instrumental, the long version of 'Rose is Rain' from cd 8. Thrilling.
Track 2 is the vocal version of Sophia, longer in the early part of the song, shorter after the song explodes. (those who have heard it, you must know what I mean... To those who haven't, I can't begin to explain.)
Track 3 is one I would call exotic in its instrumentalization, its also feels as if it is laughing at someone.
Track 5 is a tad melancholy. A very lonely sounding song, with one odd beat that sounds half a second off. If this weren't a cd, I'd wonder if my record player needle was skipping. Has a very melodic interlude.
Track 8- Eh Ro Ti Ka
Took me a little bit to go 'Hey! They're singing an *english* word! (but what a word!)
This song sounds like a theme for a fancy dance, dripping in jewels and rich fabrics. Maybe this sounds like a strange thing to say, but this song actually undulates.
Track 9- This track doesn't strike me as a particular anything at first (at first being key phrasing)...
I generally sit back and relax until the first verses of calm chanting ease into the 'watashi iru' verses...then my ears pick up. There's something about 'NAshi NAshi NAshi NAshi' immediently followed by the convoluted 'Karume Karume' lines- there are at least 2 different vocal lines twisting, rising, dipping, swinging between discordant and harminous- all the while a horn steps lower and lower, only to swing up again for the next convoluted line, each second line upswung only to fall again during the next line... then Deforme Deja-vu!
Track 12-
Track 13 is demonic, chilling, haunting, yet almost cheerful in parts. Meandering chorsus lead up to the high Yobibegere!- the oddly meancing heatbeat, folowed by the intent, driven Watashi no subete chuusei ni shite! rounds, (heartbeat)- then the instruments swirl you away into a slower, pondering jikkien that eventually leaves you at a repeat of yobigarere before the vocals become anticipitary, this is definatly leading somewhere. Ever hear White Zombie's AstroCreep 2000 album? In track 3, a lunatic priest chants 'And I Will Not Repent!'. The ending of this track can only remind me of that, as the instruments gather and swirl while a rising, demonic voice mutters in the background, gaining volume until the song ends.Strange stuff here.
