Sept 16, 2003.
I'm selling alot of my Utena collection. I have 1 BLACK ROSE RING (japanese size 11) that I will
have on auction at eBAY.com starting Sept. 17, '03. Please look for my username 'nobleutena' if you want a rare shot at an
official japanese Utena rose ring.
I will also be selling an unopened japanese OST volume 5 (the 2 disc set). Also, alot of Utena cels (including an Akio cel and
a cel of Dios!!) There are also some old trading cards- CardassMasters partial set 1 and I *think* my set 2 is complete.
This page is out of date in regards of how-to-find. Most of the legit items are now rare and hard-to-find, even on eBAY.
Other than constantly screening Utena auctions, I have no idea how you can find an official Utena rose ring. Please do not email me asking. Thanks!
'*'- Items with a '*' have linked images- Items lacking a '*' currently do NOT have images. I am always looking to obtain usable images for those items, if you can help. Thanks!
Please check this page for information about bootlegs. Thank you!
I've attempted to create a list of merchandise that was produced for Utena,
but it will be hard to list everything.
(your help is welcome! Email me if you have new, more, or more accurate info please!)
Some things here are very hard to find, a lot of it is easily found with a
little effort.
All of these things were made in Japan for Utena's target
audience, so all items would be imports. Many things here will be out of print.
Beware of individuals or companies jacking
up the prices- eBay is a good place to find items but notorious for higher prices.
Rings
The most infamous of all Utena merchandise are the Duelist rings.
These rings are
not real silver. It is recommended that after purchase you paint the surfaces, at least
the inside and outer sides, with a clear nailpolish or similar product to fend off
tarnishing. Yes, there have been reports of Duelists with green ring fingers.
Sizing is also different number wise- a japanese size 14 is said to be about equal to
a US 7, a J 12 is about a US 5.5, 6.
Ring #1- Silver duellist ring-
styled from the one in the TV series.
It has a flat pink crest inlaid with the silver rose insignia.
Ring #2- Black duellist ring-
The same ring as above, only given a black coating finish.
*Ring #3- Movie Rose Crest Ring
-
This ring is styled after the much more intricate
rose crest rings seen in the AoU manga. The band has the appearance of being
made of several bands crossing and interlinked. The crest is similar but slightly darker from
the TV ring. This ring includes a silver chain so it can be worn as a necklace- This ring
was only made in one size- japanese 12 (about a US 6).
*Special Ring #4- Movie Ring and Phonecard-
In what is said to be a very limited run of production,
a silver ring was sold in a tin box along with an Utena AoU Phonecard. This is said to be
out of print, and the only of the 4 rings to be considered truely rare.
Finally saw one on eBay- until now I wasn't sure if this ring existed. In the pic, the ring appears to be different from
all of the above rings- it has scroll work around the rose.
Rings #1-3 pop up frequently on eBay, and now is the quickest way to find one. Although, not the cheapest.
Although these rings sold for approx US$20 in Japan when they were first released, reasonable online merchants sold them for approx $30-$60.
Now eBay auctions often go over $100.
The AoU ring/chain combo does not appear to be very popular, or not as popular as the regular and BR rings, and don't usually see the same type of ferocious bidding
wars the regular and black rings can generate.
Some fans have commissioned jewelers to design and make rings, often of real silver and enamel. This method may net you a ring that is nicer, and looks
closer to the ones in the show, however this is usually the most expensive route.
Non-Ring Jewlery
-*Juri's Locket-
A very rare item, this is a gold-colored rose shaped locket. It does open, and inside is the black and white image of Shiori. It comes with a thick gold-colored chain.
I've only seen this item show up infrequently on eBay.
-*Rose Holder/ Securer-
This is the yellow curved device used to hold a Duelist's rose in their breastpocket.
It's a dark gold color, and does *not* pin. It is designed to work by hooking over the pocket lip, and
but is a little heavy to be practical.
Sometimes on eBay, sometimes infrequently at a merchant.
-Rose Pin
This is an AoU item- a round, dark-silver pin of a flowering rose. Just larger than a quarter, this is designed
to be the pin on Utena's hat in AoU.
Easier to find than other jewlery items.
-*ChuChu Watch
This is a Silver-colored ChuChu shaped watch. It comes on a black material band, but ChuChu slides off, and attatched is a small loop chain.
The watch is ChuChu's belly- a white face with UTENA in bright colors.
Not a common item.
-OP Watch, limited edition
This is a silver framed, white face watch. In the center of the face is printed with
a pink rose, and on a clear plastic disc are Utena and Anthys' black sillouettes. Utena and Anthy rotate around the watch center,
mimicing the TV opening sequence.
This item was made in limited amounts, and come numbered. Not common at all.
-*Nanami's Cow Bell
White painted metal on a red choker. The bell is smallish.
-*ChuChu Pin
Smallish metal and enamelled ChuChu pin.
Keychains
-3-D Chibi-
Small and vinyl, have only seen these for Utena, Anthy, and the SC Council. All TV style.
-Sword of Dios-
On a rather flimsy chain is a bronze colored SoD. Attached from tip to handle is a thin chain on which dangles a
metal rose crest.
-2-D SD-
Not entirely *sure* these exist, but it seems I almost remember seeing them.
Dolls, Figures, and UFO Plushies
-*Utena Chara Fashion Doll-
About 12 inches, hard plastic, bendable in some joints and waist. Soft hair. Comes with a Sword of Dios
that's almost as long as her legs. Dressed to duel, no other outfits. Mine was missing a stand.
-*Utena Sega Action Styling-
Hard plastic, jointed knees and 2 sets of hands. Dressed to duel, with SoD included.
-Sega Real Models- *Utena and *Anthy-
Sold seperatly, both are all hard plastic, includes mini ChuChu, mini drama cd, trading card, and stand.
-UFO Plush-
'UFO catcher dolls' are plush character toys sized perfectly to be held in a hand. Made to be prizes in those coin
claw machines, but are more about a feverish collector's market. Ones still with attatched official tags are more
expensive than ones without the tags. Have only seen dolls for TV style-
*Utena,
*Anthy,
*Touga,
*Miki,
*Juri,
*ChuChu.
(personal opinion--- UFOs are typically *UGLY*, in a frightening way. ChuChu looks horrible *cry*)
Cards-
Trading Cards
-*Carddass Masters 1 and *Carddass Masters 2
Each set contains over 100 cards. Set 2 is pretty easy to find, Set 1 is proving elusive. Both include foil special cards.
-*Pull Pack-
(they say 'part 1', but I've never seen a 'part 2')
These cards have rounded edges, and are called PP because each card is individually wrapped in its own paper envelope.
They are sold in bundles, often with a foil sticker card taped to the outer wrapping.
This set has 45 cards, 6 foil sticker SP cards.
-E-Graphics
These cards were made for the AoU movie- postcards with promo art, surrounded by a border from which the card can be punched.
15 regular cards, 20 is the complete set.
-Idol cards
These are official laminated wallet cards for TV style. Only 7 cards made by Movic-
Utena,
Anthy,
Touga,
*Saionji,
Miki,
Juri,
*Nanami- in that order.
-Phone Cards-
There are several phonecards featuring Utena, some from special promotions or as magazine inserts. There are also some doujinshi cards.
Some examples- these go in no particular order.
*Phone Card 1
*Phone Card 2
-PencilBoards-
Pencil boards are easily available. Some examples in no order-
*PB1-*PB2-*PB3
-Laminated Cards-
Seen frequently on eBay and other places, these are *bootleg* laminated cards featuring Utena artwork.
These are not official cards.
-Playing Cards-
These are also *bootleg*. There is only one set, and the quality is not great.
Posters and Wall Scrolls
Posters and Wall Scrolls are easily bootlegged!
Laminated posters are (usually) bootlegs. Posters and Scrolls that are poorly printed or are of poor quality are *bootlegs*.
Posters under $15~$20 are usually bootlegs. (legits can run for more, too)
There are official posters in manga style, TV style, and AoU style.
One AoU poster is a clear plastic poster, sometimes called an 'art crystal'.
Other official posters include a few that have CD and LD images on them. I'm currently collecting images of as many official posters as I can.
*Samples of official posters- 1, 2
Personal Items
-*Personal Mirror-
In a slim black flip-hinged case is a mirror with the classic TV black printed rose border.
-Etiquite Brush-
A fold-out brush, supposedly includes a mini mirror.
-*Teacup and Saucer-
Very rare item- white china with the pink rose crest on the bottom. Styled after the one in the TV serles.
-*Cell Phone Strap-
This is a black leather braid with a silver/pink enamel rose crest pendant on it- made for clipping to your cell phone.
-*Luggage Tag-
This is a brown leather (fake?) luggage tag, with a colorful printed ChuChu on one side, a clear window for your infomation on the other.
-Bookmarks-
Chibi Metal- This is a set of silver metal bookmarkers with chibi black printed characters.
AoU- A silver metal bookmark with scrolled edges, the center features a laminated color image of AoU Utena and Anthy.
-Stationary Set-
This is a set of letter paper with various manga images printed on them, ChuChu is featured alot
-*Postcard Set-
In a paper fold out are several postcards featuring manga artwork.
-Binder-
This is a yellow plastic binder, includes some paper, paper dividers. Uses japanses binder paper, not US paper.
-Clear folder-
A blue-green folder with manga Utena on the front- a slip-in style file folder. (not an opening style folder)
-Fan-
This was a movie item- a hand held black paper fan, with Utena in red. (the breaking armor image) Not common.
-Costumes-
A japanese company produced legit movie Utena (male and female style) and Anthy costumes. These are pretty expensive, and designed for female bodies somewhat smaller than the average American female.
The dedicated cosplayer should be able to track these down (it would help massivly if such individual spoke/read japanese). I believe this company also produced and sold a few cosplay items seperatly- I think I can recall Utena's
duel shoulder epaulettes sold seperately. (IMO, they weren't any better than the ones I made for myself, and those I've seen others make).
-Magnets-
An official one was made for AoU (or more than one?), have also seen bootleg magnets, as well as fan-made magnets on eBay.
CD-ROM
-*Saito Art Gallery Hybrid CD-Rom
I have not yet found this for myself, but apparently it contains an art gallery (manga), some games, ect.
-*ChuChu Maison CD-Rom
This is a neat one, with a very *large* art gallery (many images larger than found anywhere else), has a few games, wallpapers, and screensavers.
These cds are designed for japanese systems (both Mac and PC), all features may or may not work on your system.
All text is an japanese, so unless you have a system that can show J-text (and you can read it) exploring them is largely hit-and-miss.
Hard to find, out of print, some merchants list them, but all are out of stock normally.
Cells
Cells are special items, and if you want more info on cells in general I recommend checking elsewhere for information on them.
Cells for the TV series are relativly easy to find, for the movie I've mostly see lower-quality duel cells.
Prices fall in a sizable range for reasons of quality, inclusions, image shown, and seller.
Maybe I'll create a gallery of mine soon.
